Artistic disciplines: an open map for exploration

Artistic disciplines offer a vocabulary for organising discovery. Painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, ceramics, illustration, installation and digital art describe materials, traditions and modes of production. Yet they are points of orientation, not rigid compartments.

Painting may include collage, text and print. Sculpture can become installation when it transforms the experience of a space. Photography may operate as document, fictional construction or material within another object. Illustration moves between publishing, communication and autonomous practice.

Categories also change with tools. Video, sound, performance and digital media introduce other relationships with duration, participation and circulation. The same work may belong to several disciplines depending on the question we ask.

For this reason, artists.pt profiles can display more than one discipline. The first filter brings practices together; the others show how each artist expands that territory. As you explore, open neighbouring categories and compare the results.

Terms are presented in Portuguese and English to support local and international audiences. Whenever a translation cannot carry every nuance of a practice, the profile, statement and work descriptions provide the necessary context.
